Cry Baby — The Sour Gum That Makes Your Eyes Water
Cry Baby is the original extra sour bubble gum. It first appeared in 1991, made by the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Corporation and named by David Klein — the same man who invented Jelly Belly jelly beans. The name came from the rumour that the gum was sour enough to make a person's eyes water, and the packaging still promises around forty seconds of intense sourness before the coating fades and the classic bubble gum underneath takes over. Under the sour shell it's actually Double Bubble, so it blows the same big bubbles once the pucker passes.
In 2004 Cry Baby became part of Tootsie Roll Industries through its acquisition of Concord Confections, and it has been the flagship name in sour gum ever since — the gum people reach for when they want the genuine eye-watering article rather than an imitation.
Sweet and Glory stocks the Cry Baby range wholesale for UK retailers.
The Cry Baby Range
The range is built around the individually wrapped sour gumballs in their signature mouth-puckering flavours. The classic 1.24kg jar is the centrepiece, ideal for counter display and pick and mix, with a larger 4.66kg gumball tub for higher-volume sellers. Smaller formats include the 18g assorted tube and the 113g peg bag for hooks and shelves, while Cry Baby Sour Chews 198g extend the brand beyond gum into sour chewy candy. Every line carries the same extra sour coating the brand is known for.
Why Stock Cry Baby?
Sour candy is one of the strongest-performing corners of confectionery, driven by challenge culture and social media, and Cry Baby is the original name in sour gum. The eye-watering reputation makes it an easy impulse buy and a natural talking point — customers dare each other to chew several at once, which is exactly the kind of word-of-mouth that sells product. The individually wrapped gumballs are perfect for pick and mix and checkout displays, and Cry Baby sits naturally alongside other top sour brands like Toxic Waste and Warheads.
