When Bubble Yum arrived in 1975, it changed bubble gum overnight. Sold by Life Savers, it was the first soft bubble gum on the market — and the story behind it is pure Americana: the recipe came from a homemaker in Fisk, Missouri, who made her own "rubber bubblegum" and sent her son to school with it. Life Savers bought the recipe, and a gum that was soft from the first chew — no jaw-aching break-in required — became an instant national hit.
 

Then came one of confectionery's most famous urban legends. In 1977, a playground rumour spread that Bubble Yum was so soft because it contained spider eggs. Sales collapsed, and Life Savers had to take out full-page ads in newspapers across America — including the New York Times — to kill the myth, with the line "Someone is telling your kids very bad lies about very good gum." It worked: the rumour faded, sales recovered, and Bubble Yum went on to become one of the best-selling gums in the world.
