Baby Ruth has been made since 1921, and two years later its maker dropped thousands of bars by parachute over Pittsburgh to get people talking.

The bar began at the Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago, founded by Otto Schnering. Curtiss reworked an earlier bar called the Kandy Kake and named it Baby Ruth in 1921. The company always said the name honoured Ruth Cleveland, daughter of President Grover Cleveland. Most people assumed it was Babe Ruth, whose fame was rising fast at the time, and the official story conveniently meant Curtiss never had to pay him a penny.

What sets it apart is the build: chewy chocolate-flavoured nougat, a layer of caramel and a generous load of peanuts, all in a chocolatey coating. The brand passed through Nabisco and Nestlé before Ferrara, the company behind Nerds and Laffy Taffy, took it on. Ferrara relaunched the bar in 2019 with dry-roasted, US-grown peanuts.

Schnering was a showman, and the parachute drop was only one of his stunts. The bar went on to its own screen fame: in The Goonies, Chunk wins over Sloth with a Baby Ruth, and Caddyshack gave it one of the most famous swimming pool scenes in film.

Sweet and Glory stocks Baby Ruth wholesale for UK retailers.

The Baby Ruth Range

Baby Ruth comes as the standard single bar, sized for checkout, impulse and pick-and-mix positions, and as a Share Pack with two bars in one wrapper, for sharing or a bigger treat. Both are available by the case or the smaller inner, so check the current range for what is in stock now.

Why Stock Baby Ruth?

Baby Ruth is one of the oldest names in American confectionery, and its peanut, caramel and nougat mix is a different eat from anything on a typical UK shelf. Customers who have tried it in the US, or seen it in The Goonies, recognise it straight away.

It sits well alongside Reese's and other American peanut favourites in an American candy section, and the Share Pack gives a higher-value option next to the single bar. UK compliance labels are supplied with every order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy Baby Ruth in the UK?

Sweet and Glory stocks Baby Ruth in the UK, in the standard 54g bar and the 93.5g Share Pack. We supply shops wholesale and sell to individual customers too.

What is in a Baby Ruth bar?

Baby Ruth is made with peanuts, caramel and chocolate-flavoured nougat in a chocolatey coating. It contains peanuts and milk. Check the ingredient panel on the pack for full allergen information.

Was Baby Ruth named after Babe Ruth?

Officially, no. The Curtiss Candy Company said the bar was named after Ruth Cleveland, daughter of President Grover Cleveland. Many people believe it was really named after Babe Ruth, who was becoming a baseball star in 1921, and that the official story avoided paying him royalties.

Is Baby Ruth still made?

Yes. Baby Ruth is still made in the USA by Ferrara, which took over the brand and relaunched the bar in 2019 with dry-roasted, US-grown peanuts.
