Junior

Junior Mints are an American cinema classic — small, creamy peppermint centres in a dark chocolate shell, sold at movie-theatre concession stands since 1949. The cool mint-and-chocolate combination has made them one of the most recognisable treats in US film and TV, and a dependable seller for sweet shops, convenience stores and online retailers. Available at wholesale prices from Sweet and Glory.

Junior Mints Wholesale at Sweet and Glory

Few sweets are as tied to the cinema as Junior Mints. Launched in 1949 by the James O. Welch Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the little chocolate-covered mints were named — with a knowing wink — after the hit Broadway play "Junior Miss." The name sounded close enough to ride the show's fame, but different enough to avoid any licensing fees, and the mints were sold straight into movie-theatre concession stands, where they've been a fixture ever since.

The brand's most famous moment came on television in 1993, when an episode of Seinfeld built an entire plot around a Junior Mint accidentally dropped into a patient during surgery — and Kramer's line, "Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint, it's delicious!" The episode gave the brand a permanent place in pop culture and a lasting sales lift. Junior Mints are now made by Tootsie Roll Industries, still produced in that original Cambridge factory more than 75 years on.

For UK retailers, Junior Mints carry instant recognition with anyone who knows American film and TV — the dark-chocolate-and-mint combination sits a little more grown-up than typical sweets, which gives shops a point of difference. The theatre-box format lends itself naturally to American import sections, cinema-style displays and impulse positioning, and the mint-chocolate pairing sells year-round with a lift in the cooler months.
