Tootsie
One of America's oldest sweets, the Tootsie Roll has been made since 1896 — the first penny candy in the US to be individually wrapped. Its distinctive chocolate-flavoured chew, somewhere between a caramel and a taffy, has stayed almost unchanged for over a century, making it a true confectionery icon and a dependable seller across all ages.

Few American sweets carry the history of the Tootsie Roll. It was created in 1896 by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield in a small New York shop, who named it after his young daughter Clara, whose nickname was "Tootsie." It became the first penny candy in America to be individually wrapped, a small innovation that helped turn a humble chocolate-flavoured chew into a national institution that has barely changed in over a century.
The brand's most famous chapter came not in a sweet shop but on a battlefield. During the Korean War in 1950, US Marines surrounded at the frozen Chosin Reservoir radioed for "Tootsie Rolls" — their code for mortar rounds. The request was taken literally, and crates of actual Tootsie Rolls were airdropped instead. In temperatures around −30°C the sweets stayed soft enough to eat, gave exhausted troops vital calories, and were even warmed and pressed into place to plug holes in damaged equipment. The Marines who made it out became known as "The Chosin Few," and the Tootsie Roll earned a permanent place in American folklore. The brand stayed embedded in popular culture decades later through the Tootsie Pop and its famous question: how many licks does it take to get to the centre?
