Haribo — The World's First Gummy Bear

Haribo invented the gummy bear. In 1920 a confectioner named Hans Riegel registered a small company in Bonn, Germany, and built the name from his own — HAns RIegel BOnn. Two years later he made a soft, fruit-flavoured jelly sweet shaped like the trained dancing bears that performed at German fairs. He called it the Tanzbär, and it was the first commercial gummy sweet in the world. The smaller Goldbear shape everyone knows today arrived in 1960, and by then Haribo was already making liquorice, wine gums and a growing family of shapes sold in more than a hundred countries.

The Goldbears and Tangfastics on every UK supermarket shelf are only part of what Haribo produces. The company runs factories across Germany, Spain, Turkey, France and the United States, and each market gets its own flavours, shapes and seasonal editions. The American plant in Baltimore makes Gold Bears in mixes never sold in a British supermarket, while the European factories turn out regional shapes and novelty bags that never cross the Channel. That is the part of the range worth stocking, and it is the part Sweet and Glory specialises in.

Sweet and Glory stocks the import and specialist Haribo range wholesale for UK retailers.

The Haribo Range

The range focuses on the Haribo lines UK supermarkets don't carry. American Haribo includes Gold Bears in US-market flavour mixes — Wild Berry, Tropical and the red, white and blue Independence Day edition — plus the Goldbears Theatre Box. Continental European lines bring shapes and flavours made for mainland Europe rather than the UK, including The Smurfs and Smurfs Sour, Kabouters (gnomes), Krakelingen liquorice pretzels, Bananas, Berry Clouds, Berries, Ginger Lemon, Watermelon, Rainbow Worms and Unicorn-i-licious. Sour and novelty shapes round out the range with Sour Gold Bears, Sour Sodas, Sour Streamers and Sour S'ghetti, alongside Mini Rainbow Frogs, Fruit Salad, Dinosaurs and Alphabet Letters. Bag sizes run from 113g and 142g peg bags through to 1kg, 1.5kg and 3kg formats.

Why Stock Haribo?

Haribo needs no introduction to your customers — the name alone earns trust and instant recognition. The opportunity for a sweet shop, corner shop or online retailer is to stock the lines a supermarket can't: the American Gold Bears mixes, the continental shapes, the sour and novelty bags. They give a shop a reason to be the place people go for the Haribo they can't get anywhere else, and the smaller peg bags and novelty shapes work hard as impulse purchases at the till.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same Haribo as the supermarket?

It's the same brand, but a different selection. We focus on the import and specialist lines — American Gold Bears flavours, continental European shapes and sour novelty bags — rather than the standard Goldbears and Tangfastics that UK supermarkets already carry.

Do you stock American Haribo?

Yes. We carry Gold Bears in US-market mixes including Wild Berry and Tropical, the Goldbears Theatre Box and the red, white and blue Independence Day edition, all made at Haribo's American factory.

Where is Haribo made?

Haribo was founded in Bonn, Germany, in 1920 and still produces there, with additional factories in Spain, Turkey, France and the United States. The country of origin varies by line, which is why the flavours and shapes differ between markets.

Are any Haribo lines halal?

Some lines made in Turkey use beef gelatine and carry halal certification on the pack, while others use pork gelatine. Check the individual product or ask us if you need halal-certified lines specifically.

What is the minimum order?

There is no minimum order. Free delivery applies on orders over £150 ex VAT under 25kg. Orders under £150 ex VAT are charged at £7.10 per box.
