Bill Harmsen flew for Continental Airlines and gave it up to buy a farm in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He and Dorothy tried several things there. She grew flowers and fruit to sell in Denver — gladioli, peonies, raspberries. He set up a woodworking shop in the barn making doll beds and cocktail trays. Neither made a living. On 28 May 1949 they opened an ice cream shop in Golden instead, under the archway that welcomed visitors with the words Howdy Folks.
 

They named it Jolly Rancher because Rancher gave it a Western feel and Jolly made it sound like somewhere you would be welcome. The first summer was wet, the equipment was inadequate, and by the end of it the business owed more than it owned. Then winter arrived in the Rockies, and nobody in Golden wanted ice cream at all.
 

What saved it was the pivot. They started buying in chocolates from a small firm in Denver to sell through the cold months, found the confectionery outsold the ice cream, and began making their own. The farm was renamed Sugar Bar Ranch and the barn where Dorothy had stored flowers became a sweet factory. The Harmsens ran the company for another seventeen years before selling it on, and it eventually reached Hershey, who own it today — a national brand that began because a shop could not get through one winter.
