How to Stock American Candy in Your UK Shop: The Complete Compliance Guide

The question every UK retailer asks before stocking American candy for the first time is some version of the same thing: is it legal? Can I sell this in my shop? What do I need to do? It is a reasonable question. Imported food products are subject to UK food law, and the rules around labelling and ingredients are specific. The good news is that the answer, when you buy from the right supplier, is straightforward: yes, you can stock American candy in your UK shop, and no, you do not need to do very much beyond what you already do for any other product.

This guide explains what UK compliance actually means for imported American confectionery, what Sweet and Glory provides with every order, and what your responsibilities as a retailer are. It is designed to be practical and clear rather than exhaustive, because most of what retailers need to know fits on one page.

What UK Food Law Requires for Imported Confectionery

UK food labelling law requires that food products sold to consumers in the UK meet a set of requirements. For packaged confectionery, the core requirements are: information must be displayed in English; allergens must be clearly identified; a best before or use by date must be present in a format UK consumers can read; and the name and address of a UK or EU food business operator responsible for the product must appear on the packaging or accompanying documentation.

Products manufactured in the United States for the American market do not automatically meet all of these requirements. American labelling uses different formats, different terminology and in some cases different units of measurement. The responsibility for ensuring that products sold to UK consumers meet UK requirements falls on the importer — the business that brings the products into the UK from outside. Not on the retailer who buys from the importer.

This is the key point. When you buy American candy from Sweet and Glory, you are buying from the UK importer. Sweet and Glory has already ensured that every product in the range meets UK requirements before it is offered for sale. Your role as the retailer is straightforward.

Two Types of Products: L-Coded and Standard

Within the Sweet and Glory range, products fall into two categories based on how their UK compliance is delivered.

L-coded products — UK-compliant at source. Some products in the range are already UK-compliant when they arrive, because they are either produced in the UK or produced specifically with UK-compliant labelling on the packaging. These products carry a variant code ending in the letter L in the Sweet and Glory system — for example, the Jelly Belly range, the Calypso range, and several others. For L-coded products, the packaging you receive is the packaging that goes on your shelf. No additional label or documentation is needed because the product already meets UK requirements in the form you receive it.

Standard products — UK compliance labels supplied with every order. For American products packaged for the US market — the majority of the range, including brands like Nerds, Reese's, Airheads, Warheads and Sour Patch Kids — UK compliance labels are supplied alongside the products with every order. These labels contain the required English-language information, allergen declarations, best before date format, and UK importer details. They are applied to the product before it goes on display in your shop.

Sweet and Glory does not alter the original product packaging. The US packaging remains intact. The UK compliance label is a separate label supplied with the order, which you apply to each unit before putting it on sale. The process takes seconds per unit and becomes routine quickly for any retailer stocking American candy regularly.

What Sweet and Glory Checks Before Products Go on Sale

Every product that goes into the Sweet and Glory range is reviewed for UK compliance before it is listed. This covers both the labelling requirements described above and the ingredients. All products are checked against UK food additive and ingredient permissions before being offered for sale. Products that do not meet UK requirements are not listed — the range contains only products that can be legally sold in the UK.

For retailers, this means that the product selection process at Sweet and Glory has already filtered out anything problematic. If a product is in the range and available to order, it has been through this review. This is the practical value of buying from an established UK importer rather than sourcing directly: the compliance work has been done before you place your first order.

Your Responsibilities as a Retailer

Buying from a UK importer like Sweet and Glory means your compliance responsibilities are limited to the point of sale. There are three things to know.

Apply compliance labels before display. For standard (non-L-coded) products, apply the UK compliance label to each unit before putting it on your shelf. The label is supplied with your order. This is the primary active step on your part.

Maintain the label once applied. Labels should remain legible and attached for the life of the product on your shelf. If a label is damaged or falls off, contact Sweet and Glory for a replacement. Do not sell products without their compliance labels in place.

Pick and mix and repackaging require separate attention. If you take products out of their original packaging to sell loose — for example, in a pick and mix display or pre-packed gift bags — the labelling responsibility changes. Under Natasha's Law, any food that is pre-packed for direct sale (meaning you pack it in your shop before the customer buys it) must have a full ingredients list and allergens clearly displayed. For loose pick and mix sold by weight to order, allergen information must be available to customers before they buy — on a display card, a menu, or on request from staff. Sweet and Glory can provide ingredient and allergen information for any product in the range to support your own labelling needs.

A Note on Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland follows EU food law rather than GB food law in certain areas, which creates some additional considerations for retailers based in Northern Ireland. One relevant difference is that a small number of products legally sold in Great Britain contain an ingredient not permitted under EU food law. Sweet and Glory identifies these products and provides guidance on Northern Ireland sales at the point of order for any affected lines. If you are based in Northern Ireland, flag this when creating your account and Sweet and Glory will ensure your orders are appropriate for your market.
